Why Hydration Matters for Young Footballers

03/09/2026

This Week's Question:

Does hydration really make a difference for young footballers?

Absolutely! Water is essential for children's health, especially when they're running, playing and spending time outdoors. Staying hydrated helps the body regulate temperature, maintain energy and function properly throughout the day.

For young footballers, making sure they're drinking enough water before, during and after training can help them feel their best while they're active.

The Science

Our bodies rely on water for almost every important function, including regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients and supporting muscles and the brain.

When children become dehydrated, they may feel tired, develop a headache, have difficulty concentrating or notice that physical activity feels harder. During exercise, children lose water through sweat, so replacing those fluids is especially important.

For most everyday training sessions, water is the best choice. Children don't usually need sports drinks or energy drinks for regular activity. Building the habit of drinking water throughout the day is one of the simplest ways to support overall health.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

Maybe your child brings a water bottle to school and remembers to refill it throughout the day. Maybe they take a few drinks before football training and keep their bottle nearby during the session.

Small habits like these can make staying hydrated feel natural rather than something they only think about when they're thirsty.

Coach's Corner

This week, ask your child:

"Did you remember your water bottle today?"

Encourage them to bring a reusable bottle to school and football. Making water easily available is a simple way to help children build healthy hydration habits.

The XV Academy Difference

At XV Academy, we believe healthy players are built through healthy habits both on and off the pitch. Hydration is a simple but important part of helping children stay energized, focused, and ready to enjoy every session.

We're not just helping children become better footballers, we're helping them learn how to take care of their bodies for life.
