Why Breakfast Matters for Busy Kids

17/09/2026

This Week's Question:

Is breakfast really that important for children?

Yes! After a night of sleep, breakfast helps give children the energy and nutrients they need to start their day. For busy kids balancing school, football, homework and play, starting the morning with a nutritious meal can help them feel ready to learn and stay active.

The Science

Research suggests that eating breakfast can support children's concentration, memory, mood, and overall diet quality. Breakfast is also an opportunity to provide important nutrients such as protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals that growing children need.

For young athletes, breakfast can also be an important source of energy before a busy day of school or football. A balanced breakfast that includes carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats can help provide longer-lasting energy and keep children feeling satisfied throughout the morning.

Breakfast doesn't need to be complicated or perfect. The goal is simply to give growing bodies a nutritious start to the day!

What This Looks Like in Real Life

A busy school morning doesn't always leave much time for cooking. Simple options like porridge with banana and berries, wholegrain toast with eggs, Greek yogurt with fruit and oats or a smoothie with fruit and milk can make a great breakfast.

Even something prepared the night before can make mornings easier. Overnight oats, boiled eggs or a piece of fruit and wholegrain toast are quick options when everyone is rushing out the door.

Coach's Corner

This week, ask your child:

"What would you like to have for breakfast tomorrow?"

Giving children a choice between a few nutritious options can help them become more involved in their food choices and develop healthy habits they can carry with them as they grow.

The XV Academy Difference

At XV Academy, we believe that helping children become healthy, confident players starts well before they step onto the pitch. Nutrition is an important part of supporting growing bodies, learning, energy, and enjoyment of sport.

We want our players to understand that looking after their health isn't just about football performance. It's about giving their bodies what they need to learn, play, grow, and feel their best every day.
