Summer: The Best Time for Individual Player Development

02/07/2026

During the season, club football is all about the team. Club training sessions focus on tactics, match preparation, and getting results each weekend. While that's an essential part of the game, it often leaves limited time for players to work on their individual development.

Summer changes that.

With fewer competitive matches and longer evenings, players have the opportunity to focus on the skills that can elevate their game. It's the perfect time to improve your first touch, sharpen your passing, become more confident in 1v1 situations, develop your weaker foot, or build the speed and agility needed to compete at a higher level.

The biggest improvements don't come from one intense week of training—they come from consistent work over several weeks. Even adding one or two extra football sessions each week, combined with regular practice at home, can have a significant impact by the time the new season begins.

Every player develops at a different pace, which is why individual development is so important. Rather than comparing yourself to teammates, focus on becoming a better version of yourself. Set one or two clear goals for the summer, track your progress, and celebrate the small improvements along the way. Those small gains compound over time and often become the difference when the season starts again.

At XVAcademy, that's exactly what our summer programme is built around. Through our Position Specific Clinics, Football Hub Sessions, Weekly Small Group Sessions, Summer Camps and 1-2-1 Sessions, players receive the opportunity to develop the technical, physical, and decision-making aspects of their game in an enjoyable, high-energy environment.

The players who return in August with greater confidence aren't always the ones who played the most football over the summer—they're the ones who trained with purpose. Make this summer count, invest in your own development, and give yourself the best possible platform for the season ahead.
